Useful Research Websites

Here are some websites that could be useful to extract information from for my dissertation:

Claremont Colleges Thesis: The Rise and Fall of Record Labels
- I believe this thesis to be fairly reliable as each source is cited in footnotes at the end of each page. This means a large amount of research has been completed in order to produce the document, and individual assessment of each source's reliability will most likely have been completed during this process.

The Guardian: When Artists are Held Hostage by Record Labels
The Guardian: What do Record Labels Actually do?
- These two articles may have to be approached with a degree of scepticism as the newspaper adopts a tabloid format. These sources are also opinion articles, and are written from the viewpoint of the journalist, rather than providing a wide-range of facts from an un-biased point of view. There are no sources cited in the document, only hyperlinks to other articles on The Guardian's website. There is also a political affiliation with Liberal Democrats, which may affect the way the opinion articles are written.

mn2s: 5 Reasons Record Labels Still Matter
- I believe this website is not recognised in day-to-day life. The points are made in very short paragraphs, and again, no links to sources are used. However, mn2s offers music distribution and label services (as shown by the menu at the bottom on the web page), so this increases their ability to produce reliable information on the topic in articles.

Forbes: The Record Labels of the Future are Already Here
- This article is more than two years old, which may cause some of the data/information to be out of date, affecting its reliability. The writer links various examples, sources and other articles throughout her points through hyperlinks, allowing for further research and fact-checking after reading this article. Forbes is a highly regarded company and is consumed through mainstream media quite often.

Quartz: Mariah Carey's record-breaking day shows how little musicians make from Spotify
- This particular Quartz article focuses on one artists and how they make money through streaming. However, it may provide some general information on the world of streaming services and how artists gain from them. The information may be out of date, but the article may provide a picture of how the music industry has changed if more recent figures can be found.

CNBC: Spotify and Apple Music should become record labels so musicians can make a fair living
- This article was linked in the previous Quartz page. It provides some key facts about streaming services and the monetary values that are important for artists. The article was written in 2018, which, again, may lead to out of date information/values, reducing its reliability for the current areas of my research.

Sound on Sound: Recording Contracts Explained
- This article was written by an entertainment lawyer, who understands the terms of record contracts. This means that the facts and explanations in the article are most likely true and can be viewed as reliable. A professional in this field is a useful source for secondary information to use in my dissertation, as he is well educated and is trained to find harmful areas of a contract.
