Spotify is still losing money, despite growing 40% a year. Record labels can take as much as 70% of royalties. When Spotify was in it's early days, it sought investments from the big record labels, but have now effectively replaced labels.

This means a large amount of research has been completed in order to produce the document, and individual assessment of each source's reliability will most likely have been completed during this process. The Guardian: When Artists are Held Hostage by Record Labels The Guardian: What do Record Labels Actually do? - These two articles may have to be approached with a degree of scepticism as the newspaper adopts a tabloid format. These sources are also opinion articles, and are written from the viewpoint of the journalist, rather than providing a wide-range of facts from an un-biased point of view.
