Style Models for Inside Pages

In order to further understand the layout of a magazine, I have taken some examples of different page layouts form music magazines that I own. These examples were taken from issues of RockSound magazine, which is aimed towards more alternative music fans.

Contents Page

Contents Page From Waterparks Issue
This contents page is a good example because it is not overcrowded, but still gives the required information for a reader to find out what is featured inside of the magazine. The top image shows the feature artist of this month's issue of RockSound (in this case, the image shows pop-punk/rock band Waterparks). This is important because they are usually the main appeal of the magazine, as the website sells merchandise and magazine bundles each month.

The contents themselves are spilt up into three sections throughout the magazine, The first is the 'Out Front and Regulars', which includes the articles and advice columns that feature in every issues of the magazine. The contents of them vary with each issue, but the pages themselves are regular features.

The second section is 'Breakout'. This section features two articles about up-and-coming artists that the magazine has picked out for the month. One of the articles is a direct focus on one artist, and the other includes any other artist the magazine would like to give a platform to.

The third and final section is 'Features'. Here is where any other artists interviews/articles are placed, including the cover artists. Keeping these in a separate section allows the reader to easily navigate to which article they would like to read and helps maintain a cohesive tone that progresses and changes through the magazine.

Despite my magazine being directed at the business side of the music industry, the layout and effect of this contents page still remains. A simplistic design will help create a clean layout, whilst providing all the information necessary for the audience.

Double Article Page

This double page spread is an example of both a well and possibly poorly designed article page. The image header was not well-placed and somewhat ruins the design of the page, as it it slightly cut off.
