Designing the Inside of the Magazine

(finished designing 30th October 2020)

Overall Design:

The general design idea for the magazine was a mainly black and white theme, with pictures used to add colour. This colour scheme allowed me to create a cohesive design, whilst making each page unique in layout. By creating a mix of more simple article pages and slightly busier filler pages, I hope to have created a magazine that is easy to read whilst also challenging myself to learn new techniques.

The filler pages were designed with the simple shapes of the other pages in mind, whilst also being functional to give meaning to the project as a whole. For example, I couldn't find a timetable for the music venue that fit the style of my project, so I created my own in the colour scheme and layout that fits my magazine much more.

Spread #1: Streaming Sites

The first double-page spread in my magazine is dedicated to my article about the streaming side of the music industry. I originally planned for the focus of the design to be the Spotify logo, as it is one of the most prominent and recognisable platforms in the sector today. When I created this in InDesign, it did not give the impression of a clean, professional magazine. I instead used a more crisp, aesthetically pleasing image that tied the spread in with the rest of the magazine. Changing the layout of this spread also allowed me to link the other spreads too.

Spread #2: Record Labels

The middle spread of my magazine differed slightly from the others in the product because it separated both halves of the magazine. Instead of adding an image, I instead added a graphic into the centre of the left-hand page. This allowed me to show a different set of skills that weren't involved in the other pages, included the wrapping of the text around the circular-shaped graphic. The more simplified design stands out against the more image-based designs of the two spreads at either side of it.

Spread #3: Independent Artists

The third spread allocated to the articles themselves focused on the experience of independent artists in the music industry. I originally wanted to include an image of a performer on stage and chose an image from Unsplash of a drummer from a back-view. I then put this image into Photoshop and cut around in with the aim of wrapping the text around the shape of the top of the image as it emerges from the bottom of the page. However, I then decided that this layout was way too simple for the rest of the magazine and didn't fit the cohesive design. After looking at some pre-existing examples of magazines I owned, i saw a design that I felt was a better fit. I took some more images relating to the subject topic and cropped them into a circular shape coming from the edge of the page. This idea combined with the white background allowed me to link the design to the first spread, whilst also adding something new.
