Limitations of My Project

One of the main limitations of my project was my inability to use more original photography in my final physical product. I would've liked to have attempted to take my own photos for the magazine, other than my personal photos I have already used in the magazine. For example, the pictures I used in the 'independent artist' spread could have been done with the help of some of my friends who study music in their A-Levels. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was unable to access this department in school.

Instead, I chose to use some copyright-free images from unsplash.com. This website contains a huge database of images provided by a wide range of photographers. In some ways, this may have benefitted the quality of my final project because of the more professional photos I was able to access. The amount of photos available on this website allowed me to pick the most suitable pictures not only for the topic of each page, but also the cohesive colour scheme I had aimed for when designing the magazine.

Another limitation of my magazine also somewhat focused on the photos used within it. Originally, I had aimed to fill at least one of the pages with 'adverts' from some students in my year group who were hoping to enter into a career in music. This approach would have allowed me to enforce the idea that my magazine was directed at a more local audience. I tried to collect pictures to be used in this section of the magazine, but, unfortunately, the quality of the one photo I did receive would have compromised the quality of the magazine. As I wanted to produce a physical print, it was very important that the photos I had used were the highest quality possible.

Because of this, I made the decision to change the purpose of these pages to something that would print effectively, but still continue to mirror the local scene it was directed towards. I chose to replicate the timetable for the 02 Academy in Sheffield, which is the closest venue which is frequently used by smaller artists. I would have liked to include some of these up-and-coming artists in the product, but I wanted to ensure that I created a professional magazine, so I had to rethink how I was going to utilise these pages.

I also faced some difficulty when it comes to conducting primary research for my project. Due to a lack of responses, I was unable to include the points of view of real-life members of the music industry. I sent out these questionnaires when my project solely focused on the role of record labels and how they have changed in recent years. As my project developed, I believed it would have been more useful to get firsthand views from musicians who have experienced a record deal, rather than the businesses behind them. Overall, I believed that these responses may not have been suitable for the written pieces in the magazine, so I preferred to use secondary research to find firsthand experiences of the music industry that I could write about clearly and integrate fluently into my writing.
